Downtown Louisville Walking Tours
Think Louisville’s just bourbon, baseball bats, and genteel Southern charm? Think again. This city has been hiding chaos in plain sight since the 1700s. We’ve got haunted firehouses, glittery butts, Civil War shootouts, and a disco ball queen who still hot-glues like a legend.
Here are five reasons to join us on one of our Downtown Louisville walking tours:
1. A Union General Got Murdered in a Hotel Lobby. And Nobody Cared.
In 1862, the Galt House Hotel was ground zero for one of the most chaotic leadership “transitions” in U.S. military history. Union Brigadier General Jefferson C. Davis (yes, unfortunately sharing a name with the Confederate president) confronted his commanding officer, General William “Bull” Nelson, in the lobby after weeks of tension.
Nelson slapped him. Davis borrowed a pistol. Nelson called him a “damned puppy.” Davis shot him in the chest.
Nelson died within minutes, on the staircase, in full uniform. Davis? Arrested… and quietly released. The Union Army needed warm bodies more than it needed justice, and Davis was back in action a few months later like nothing happened. Imagine shooting your boss during a staff meeting and getting promoted. Civil War logic, folks.
2. We Have a 30-Foot Golden Butt. And It’s Glorious.
On the corner of Seventh and Main, Louisville proudly displays a double-sized, gold-plated replica of Michelangelo’s David. He’s 30 feet tall, anatomically accurate, and unapologetically mooning traffic like it’s his job.
Made by Turkish conceptual artist Serkan Özkaya, this shimmering statue toured New York City before finding his forever home here in 2012. Since then, he’s become a beloved local icon and an accidental wake-up call for hotel guests who weren’t expecting a giant glittering derrière outside their window.
Why a golden David? Because it’s Louisville, and we don’t half-commit to weird.

3. One of Our Firehouses Might Be Haunted by Its Own Alarm
Firehouse No. 2 looks like it came out of a Victorian novel: heavy stone arches, a hose-drying tower, and carved portraits of fire chiefs long gone. But inside? Things get real creepy, real fast.
In 1889, a warehouse fire up the street turned tragic when six firefighters were crushed by a collapsing wall. It became known as Fatal Box 48, and ever since, strange things have been happening inside the station: bells ring with no one around, icy drafts blow through sealed rooms, and people swear they’ve seen shadows pacing the upper floors.
It’s not on the haunted house circuit. No strobe lights. No fog machines. Just a piece of working history where the past still clocks in.
4. Our Most Dazzling Disco Balls Came from the Highlands

If you partied in the ’70s or ’80s, there’s a good chance your disco ball came from Louisville. Specifically, from a woman named Yolanda “Yo Yo” Baker, who worked at Omega National Products gluing thousands of tiny mirrors by hand.
Studio 54? That was her sparkle. Soul Train? Also her. When other cities brag about their nightlife, Louisville gets to say, “Yeah, we built the atmosphere.”
Yolanda’s still here, still gluing, still glittering, still reigning as America’s last true disco ball maker. If Louisville had a crown jewel, it would spin.
5. Evan Williams: Bourbon Pioneer… and Possibly Louisville’s First Office Drunk
In 1783, Evan Williams set up Louisville’s first commercial distillery on the banks of the Ohio River. Great move. Then he became the city’s first wharf master… and started showing up to council meetings with a bottle of his own bourbon.
Disagreements? Settled with whiskey. Logistics issues? Handled after a few sips. Legend says Evan’s biggest contribution wasn’t just bourbon, it was making government meetings bearable.
Today, you can visit the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience on historic Whiskey Row. Just don’t expect it to come with a city council reenactment and a flight of poor decisions.
